Local man faces more drug conspiracy charges

Shiv Tailor, Benjamin Jamal Johnson, and Savannah Lynn Stroud face multiple charges from the State Grand Jury for their alleged involvement in a conspiracy to distribute opioids.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (August 1, 2019) — A 31-year-old Batesburg man arrested in May for participating in an alleged conspiracy to traffic heroin and fentanyl has been named in new indictments handed down by the State Grand Jury.

Benjamin Jamal “Slim” Johnson was among three suspects charged in May with trafficking 14 to 28 grams of heroin. Shiv Balvant Tailor, 21, and Savannah Lynn Stroud, 20, both of Lexington, also were charged in the May arrest and were named in the original superseding indictment and new indictments unsealed last week by South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson.

Mr. Tailor also was indicted by the State Grand Jury for murder in the death of Bradley Brunson. Brunson died from an overdose of fentanyl on November 23, 2018.

“It is common knowledge that the opioid crisis has devastated South Carolina and the entire nation. This office intends to take aggressive action to fight this problem,” Attorney General Wilson said in a release. “I want to thank all the law enforcement agencies involved for their hard work on this case. It’s another excellent example of different agencies working together with the State Grand Jury.”

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, the Saluda County Sheriff’s Department, the Laurens County Sheriff’s Department, and the City of Columbia Police Department were involved in the investigation that led to the suspects’ arrests.

The original indictment alleged that the “defendants conspired to deal counterfeit ‘Roxies’ consisting of a mixture containing heroin and other substances, including in some instances fentanyl.”

The cases will be prosecuted by State Grand Jury Section Chief Creighton Waters and Senior Assistant Attorney General Joshua Underwood. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in a court of law.
