Hendrix named new Assistant Town Manager in Batesburg-Leesville

Jay Hendrix, the current Fire Chief in the Town of Batesburg-Leesville, has been named the new Assistant Town Manager, effectively immediately.

Jason “Jay” Hendrix, the current Chief of the Batesburg-Leesville Fire Department, has been named Assistant Town Manager for the Town of Batesburg-Leesville.

Mr. Hendrix will succeed Seth Duncan, the outgoing Assistant Town Manager, who recently was hired as City Manager for the City of York in South Carolina’s Upstate. More than a dozen candidates were interviewed for the position by Town Manager Ted Luckadoo, who has sole hiring authority to name his assistant. The hiring does not have to be ratified by Town Council.

“We are excited about Jay coming on board in this capacity,” said Mr. Luckadoo in a written statement from Town Hall. “Jay has done a terrific job as fire chief in securing grants, growing our volunteer corps, and managing daily operations. His leadership skills and experience will be invaluable as we continue to grow as an organization and community.”

Mr. Hendrix will become the Assistant Town Manager effective immediately so that he may receive further acclimation to the position from his predecessor. However, he will retain day-to-day oversight of the fire department until the Town can complete its search for a new Fire Chief.

Mr. Duncan’s last day in Batesburg-Leesville will be August 16.

“We received resumés and interviewed multiple candidates from throughout South Carolina for the position,” Mr. Luckadoo said. “In the end, it came down to two great candidates. What set Jay apart was his education, successes as a department head for the Town, supervisory and leadership experience, and existing knowledge of all that we currently have going on in town. I feel confident that Jay can hit the ground running from Day One.”

Mr. Hendrix has been employed full-time with the Town of Batesburg-Leesville since 2010 and has served as the Fire Chief since 2013. He began working with the Town as a volunteer firefighter in December 1992.

A lifelong resident of Batesburg-Leesville and a 1998 graduate of the University of South Carolina, Mr. Hendrix also has completed professional development with Leadership Lexington County, the South Carolina Firefighter’s Association Leadership Institute and earned a Certificate in Public Service from Greenville Technical College.

“I am excited about this new opportunity,” Mr. Hendrix said in a statement. “As a lifelong resident of Batesburg-Leesville, I love our community and the people that live and work here. Our town has so much potential, and I want to help us reach that potential and want to be a part of our future growth.”
