The Batesburg-Leesville varsity boys basketball team split their games last week as they defeated Fox Creek at home but fell to Saluda on the road.
The Panthers are now 7-9 overall and 2-3 in Region 2-AA play. This week, the Panthers host Ridge Spring-Monetta on Wednesday before traveling to Abbeville on Friday as they start their second run through the region line-up. On Feb. 4, the Panthers will travel to Silver Bluff before returning home on Friday, Feb. 7 to face Ninety Six.

The Panthers dominated the Predators from Fox Creek at home last week as they jumped out to a 17-8 first quarter lead and extended the lead to 30-12 at the half. Jenavas “Tee” Williams led the Panthers with 12 first-half points. In the third quarter the Panthers extended the lead even further as they built a 23 point lead at the end of the quarter, 48-25. In the fourth quarter the Panthers substituted freely and the Predators cut the final deficit to 17 points as B-L won easily.

Saluda 65, B-L 60
B-L traveled to Saluda Friday night and gave the talented Tigers a run for the money before falling 65-60. In the first quarter, Saluda built a 14-7 lead and would extend it to double digits in the second quarter and led 31-21 at the half as B-L struggled from the field with just seven field goals. In the third quarter the Tigers extended their lead to 49-35, but in the fourth quarter the Panthers fought back as Timmy Williams hit five 3-pointers in the second half, including three in the final stanza as he finished with a game high 21 points.
Despite the Panthers pressing defense a strategic fouling late in the game, the Tigers were able to convert 8 of 16 free throws to hold on for the 65-60 victory. B-L scorers: T. Williams 21, K. Williams 12, Amah-Dre Leaphart 8, Barr-Williams 8, J. Williams 5, Hendrix 4, Yarbrough 2.

Against Fox Creek, B-L led 7-2 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 18-9 by halftime as Stayshawn Addy scored six first-half points. In the third quarter, B-L would extend the lead to 25-14 before holding on for a 28-20 win. Addy, Ty Adams and Ziggy Merritt all finished with six points, while Knowledge Jeffcoat and JJ Risher added five points each.
Against Saluda, both teams again started slowly with B-L lead 6-4 at the end of the first quarter. A strong second quarter was paced by a balanced scoring attack as six players scored to build the lead to 20-9. In the third quarter, B-L would extend the lead to 30-18 as Jeffcoat scored six points. B-L would put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter as B-L cruised to a 39-24 victory.
Jeffcoat finished with 13 points while Merritt scored 12. Addy scored five points while Adams added four. Imani Hall and Michael Leaphart each scored two points while A’Marcus Alewine added one point.
