The Batesburg-Leesville varsity girls’ basketball team started 2020 off on a winning note by handling the Falcons of Ben Lippen 46-35 last Friday at home.
The Falcons opened the game hot as Eden Hester hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter, as they led 11-8. The B-L offense would get on track in the second quarter behind Dyani Dennis and Kiara Burton as they took the lead 18-16 at the half. In the third quarter, the Panther offense was on fire as they built a 35-26 lead behind two 3-pointers apiece from Dennis and Taliyah Corbit. In the fourth, the Panthers built a big lead before the Falcons cut the final margin to 46-35.
Dennis led the Panthers with16 points, while Hester led the Falcons with 18 on six 3-pointers. B-L scorers: Dennis 18, Jaylah Barr 11, Corbit 10, Burton 8, Sahniah Wigfall 1.
Over the Christmas break, the Lady Panthers dropped three tournament games. They were to play at Gilbert on Tuesday, Jan. 7 and will host Abbeville this Friday before hosting Silver Bluff next Tuesday. Next Friday, the Panthers will travel to Ninety Six.
The Batesburg-Leesville junior varsity boys’ basketball team improved to 3-0 Friday with a 26-25 win over Ben Lippen.
The Panthers and Falcons were tied 6-6 at the end of the first quarter and 13-13 at the half. The Panthers would struggle with just one third quarter point as the Falcons took a 17-14 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Panthers would finally get hot. Imani Hall hit two three pointers in the quarter as the Panthers rallied to take the lead and then held on for the 26-25 victory.
