The Gilbert Indians improved to 2-0 with a wild 52-35 victory over the Batesburg-Leesville Panthers (1-1).
Tre Robinson led B-L as he passed for 211 yards and three touchdowns, while Marvin Gantt finished with 138 yards on 20 carries. For the Indians, Jy Tolen was 25-for-33 for 276 yards and two touchdowns. Unofficially, B-L tallied 405 yards while Gilbert finished with 448 yards of offense. Three B-L turnovers proved costly while Gilbert only lost the ball once.
B-L opened the game on fire as the defense forced a 3-and-out and turned a short drive into a 7-0 lead on a 33 yard pass from Robinson to Tee Williams. B-L would extend the lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter on a 10-yard run by Amah-Dre Leaphart. Gilbert cut it to 14-7 before Keshoun Williams scored on a 4-yard run to make it 21-7 with 4:42 to play in the first half. Gilbert would quickly answer to make it 21-14.
B-L looked to be driving to answer again, but a fumble at the Gilbert 23 started a painful slide. Gilbert scored on a 77-yard pass play to quickly tie the game 21-21 with 1:21 to play before the half. Then, as B-L attempt to convert fourth and inches with just 14 seconds to play in the half, a fumble was scooped up and returned 22 yards for a score and a 28-21 halftime lead as the Indians scored 21 unanswered points in 3:30 minutes.
Gilbert opened the second half with back-to-back scoring drives to go up 42-21 before the Panther offense got on track again. Jackson Lorick scored on a 15-yard pass from Robinson to make it 42-27 late in the third quarter. Gilbert answered with a field goal before B-L scored again when Robinson connected with Shauntrell Hendrix for a 67-yard scoring pass to make it 45-35 with 7:41 to play. Gilbert added a late score and then B-L fumbled around the goal line in the final minutes to seal their fate.
