Panthers drop region opener

The Batesburg-Leesville varsity boys basketball team picked up a win last week at Ridge Spring-Monetta and dropped two games to Fox Creek and Crescent to move to 3-8 on the sea- son and 0-1 in Region 2-AA. This week the Panthers host Ninety Six on Tuesday and travel to Abbeville on Friday night.

Fox Creek 61, B-L 36

At Fox Creek the Panthers fell behind early and trailed 18-10 after the first quarter and 34-16 at the half. Despite playing with- out starter Bishop Cannon the Panthers hung with the Predators in the third quarter as the score was 48-29 before the Predators put the game away in the fourth quarter. Jaquarius Hair led all scorers with 17 points while Brandyn Cuiller led Fox Creek with 14. At Ridge Spring-Monetta the Panthers led early as Hair scored five first quarter points and Coleman added four as B-L took a 13-9 lead. By halftime the Panthers led by seven, 28-21. In the third quarter the Trojans closed the gap to 40-36. In the fourth quarter things got tight in the back and forth affair but the Panthers were able to pull out the heartstopper with a Cole- man layup with two seconds remaining in the game for the 49- 47 win. Josh Ware led all scorers for RSM with 14 points while Cannon led B-L with 13. B-L scorers: Cannon 13, Hair 12, Cole- man 8, Stewart 5, Janeius Haltiwanger 5, Williams 2, Wigfall 2, Butler 2.

Crescent 72, B-L 57

Friday night the Panthers hosted the Tigers in the region opener. The fast paced action saw Crescent with a slim 16-13 lead after the first quarter but they opened it up to 40-25 at the half as their balanced scoring was too much for B-L . In the third quarter the Tigers extended their lead to 25 points, 64-39 before B-L finished with a strong fourth quarter. Crescent had three players in double figures at 13, 14 and 15 points. With Hair out of the lineup Cannon picked up the scoring load for the Pan- thers as he scored a game high 21 points.
