John W. Davenport

The homegoing celebration for John W. (Sonny) Davenport, 79, was held at 1:00 pm Friday, April 6, 2018, at St. Mark Baptist Church, Batesburg-Leesville, with Rev. Charles Davenport, Pastor officiating and Pastor, Amos O. Harling, Jr. delivering the Eulogy. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Services were entrusted to Amos & Sons Funeral Home.
John departed this earthly life on Friday, March 30, 2018, at his residence in Batesburg-Leesville, SC.
John “Sonny” Davenport, was born June 1, 1938 in Aiken, South Carolina to the late James and Julia Davenport.
John graduated from Twin City High School, Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He met his wife in 1967 in New York and got married. He worked at the food City Supermarket as a manager for 28 years. John was the president of the University of West Burnside Neighborhood Youth Club.
In 1992, John moved his family to Batesburg-Leesville, SC. He became a devoted member of Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church until his health began to decline. John was also a member of the Twin City Lodge, Number 316. He was a Past Worshipful Master. He also served as District Sentinel for the Eastern Stars. He was also the Past Worthy Patron for the Wide Awake Chapter, Number 106, Order of Eastern Star.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents and one step-son, Alvin Spratling. Those left to cherish his memories include: his loving wife, Carrie Davenport of the home; one son – John (Erika) Davenport, Batesburg; one daughter, Donna Dandy, Aiken, SC; one step-son, Melvin Spratling, Camphill, Alabama; one stepdaughter-in-law, Masako Spratling, Lexington, SC; ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and many sorrowing friends.
