Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives on Monday, January 26 arrested a 76-year-old man on charges that the man sexually assaulted a 5-year-old girl, who now is age 19, between January 2000 and August 2000. Detectives also charged the man with improperly touching an 8-year-girl on December 13, 2014, improperly touching a 6-year-old girl on December 21, 2014, performing sexual acts on a second 6-year-old girl on December 21, 2014 and performing sexual acts on a second 8-year-old girl on December 21, 2014.
Lexington County Sheriff Lewis McCarty said he will not release information concerning the relationship between Preston Dowie Martin, 76, and the five females whom Martin is accused of sexually assaulting because the release of that information could be used to identify the five females who are all sexual assault victims. Martin was being held without bond on Tuesday, January 27 at the Lexington County Detention Center after a Lexington County magistrate denied bond for Martin during a court hearing that was held on Tuesday morning.
Sheriff’s Department Special Victims Unit detectives arrested Martin on arrest warrants on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a child who was under the age of 11, three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a child who was under the age of 16 and one count of performing a lewd act upon a child who was under the age of 16, McCarty said.
Arrest warrants allege that between January 2000 and August 2000 Martin performed sexual acts on a 5-year-old girl, who now is age 19, McCarty said.
An arrest warrant further alleges that Martin improperly touched an 8-year-old girl on December 13, 2014, McCarty said.
In addition, arrest warrants allege that Martin improperly touched a 6-year-old girl, performed sexual acts on a second 8-year-old girl and performed sexual acts on a second 6-year-old girl on December 21, 2014, McCarty said.
The Sheriff’s Department initiated an investigation on December 21, 2014 after the mother of one of the victims reported that her daughter as well as two other victims told her that Martin had improperly touched or performed sexual acts on the three girls, McCarty said.
McCarty asked anyone with information concerning additional incidents in which Martin interacted improperly with children to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
