Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Saturday, January 3 arrested a 43-year-old Leesville man on charges that the man tried to kill a 47-year-old female acquaintance by setting a bed on fire in a bedroom at the man’s home on Pooles Court near Leesville. The woman was on the bed when it was set on fire, but the woman was able to escape from the bedroom without being seriously injured. The fire completely destroyed the man’s home.
Lexington County Sheriff Lewis McCarty said deputies arrested James Poole, Jr., 43, of 124 Pooles Court, Leesville, on an arrest warrant on a charge of attempted murder. Poole was being held without bond on Saturday at the Lexington County Detention Center after a Lexington County magistrate denied bond for Poole during a bond hearing on Saturday.
Poole will be served with an additional arrest warrant on a charge of third-degree arson later on Saturday, McCarty said.
Arrest warrants allege that at about 11:40 p.m. on Friday, January 2 Poole tried to kill the 47-year-old woman, who is an acquaintance of Poole, McCarty said. Poole ordered the woman to get out of the bed in the bedroom at Poole’s home and then set fire to the bed while the woman still was on the bed. The woman escaped from Poole’s home without being seriously injured.
The circumstances of the attempted murder and arson as well as the motive for the crimes remain under investigation, McCarty said.
