Lexington County business owner arrested for evading $34K in taxes

Gerald Chavis, owner of Vegetable Medley in Lexington County, was arrested yesterday by South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) investigators. The defendant is charged with three counts of tax evasion after attempting to evade $34,130 in sales tax for 2015 through 2017.

In 2015 and 2016, Chavis underreported the business’ gross sales on the monthly sales tax returns and evaded paying $18,316 in sales tax to the State of South Carolina. In 2017, the defendant underreported gross sales for January through April and failed to file returns for May through August. Chavis evaded paying $15,814 in sales tax for 2017.

Chavis is currently being held at the Lexington County Detention Center. If convicted, he faces fines up to $10,000 and/or up to five years in prison per charge.

The SCDOR is committed to the fair administration of tax laws. By taking enforcement action against noncompliant taxpayers, the Department seeks to prevent unfairly increasing the tax burden on those who do comply.
