Lexington County Council has denied a request made by Ridge Protection Coalition member, Lisa Lewis, to speak in open session concerning Vulcan Materials Plans A and B which includes the closing of Stutman Road. Their reason for this denial is that the public hearing has already been held and RPC was allowed to speak at that time. The May 13, 2014 hearing was for the change in Zoning Text Amendment T13-04 and has nothing to do with the request to speak at the January 27, 2015 meeting.
Instead Lewis was allowed to speak to Council during a committee meeting in closed chambers. Her comments were neither recorded or videotaped to present to the public at a later date. While this is not what was requested, Lewis accepted the opportunity to share the views of RPC. In a letter written by Lewis to County Council Chairman following the meeting, she said, “We (RPC) find it extremely difficult to believe that one person – the Chairman of County Council Johnny Jeffcoat – has the power to deny citizens the opportunity to address the citizen-elected council in a forum that other citizens can review.”
