Lunch prices for all Lexington Three schools will increase by 10 cents per meal for full-paying students during the 2017-17 school year. Paid meal pricing is no longer a local decision because as of July 1, 2011, the federal government determined how much a paid lunch will cost. Districts are required to increase the price of paid meals if the price charged is less than the difference between monies provided by the federal government for free meals.
Each district must complete a formula which shows if the local price for paid meals is high enough to do this. If not, the formula will show what the lunch price increase should be. There is a cap of 10 cents on how much the price can be increased yearly. Lexington Three’s paid meal price is not high enough according to this formula, so the District must increase the price of school lunches. This means that full-paying students at B-L Primary will pay $2.35 per lunch meal; and full-paying students at B-L Elementary, B-L Middle and B-L High will pay $2.50. Breakfast prices at B-L Middle and B-L High will remain at 75 cents this year and all B-L Primary and B-L Elementary students will still eat breakfast free at their respective schools.
In 2007, Batesburg-Leesville Primary and Elementary schools were the first two schools in South Carolina to receive the USHealthier Challenge recognition for their healthy meals. Those school have also received Fresh Fruits and Vegetables grants and Farm to School grants, which have helped teach students the importance of eating healthy fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Lexington Three serves school meals that meet many of the tough federal nutrition standards, ensuring that meals are healthy, well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school.
All Lexington 3 students will be offered the following food options daily:
Fresh and Chilled Fruits
Students must take 3 out of the 5 components at lunch with one component being a ½ cup fruit or ½ cup vegetables and may take all 5 components.
At breakfast, students will be offered the following:
Students must take 3 out of the 4 components with one being a fruit.
School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits for saturated fat and portion size.
School lunches must also meet additional standards requiring the follows:
• Age-appropriate calorie limits
• Larger servings of vegetables (students must take at least one serving of produce)
• A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
• Fat-free or 1 percent milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
• More whole grains
• Less sodium
