Kent Coleman, director of the Mining and
Solid Waste Management Division at DHEC,
spoke to the Ridge Protection Coalition at their
last meeting January 15. RPC members have
been concerned over the fact that the proposed
Vulcan quarry could cause a loss of well water
as well as their blasting over an earthquake
fault line that runs through the site.
Coleman stated that currently DHEC does
not have any applications in house for this
mine and no applications have been received to
date. Asked if there had been any talks between
Vulcan representatives and DHEC personnel,
Coleman replied DHEC had heard from Vulcan
stating they were considering putting a quarry
in this area but gave no details. He added
DHEC had heard a lot from individuals who
had called and told them about the plans and
that they had also seen reports in the newspapers.
